A few months back In The Can Alum Karl Lind served as the Director of Photography on the 2009 Cascade Aids Project (CAP) Video. The video was Directed by Dave Bamford and produced by his company Soundview Recording. It was truly an honor and an incredibly moving experience to work on this project, it is my hope that CAP will continue to help people affected by HIV and AIDS and that we will soon find a cure. To learn how you can help CAP please visit their website and please consider making a donation and or volunteering some of your time.

The Experimental Filmmaker Karaoke Throwdown Take II! 5/8 @Holocene 10PM

Hola amigos,

In The Can Alum Karl here, I am happy to report that my favorite time of the year is returning yet again. Yes the 2009 edition of the PDX Film Fest! is nearly upon us. This year they have outdone themselves yet again in delivering to our fair city what promises to be a rather remarkable bounty of experimental cinematic treats.

This year (along with a bevy of other mega rad filmmakers) I was invited back to participate in the Karaoke Throwdown portion of the fest, I wasted no time (ok, a few months did go by) and came up with what I knew would be a fun project. Big ups to Art Santana and the rest of the peeps at Ground Kontrol Classic Game Arcade for coming through bigtime! I needed an 80's ish era playland for a location and what the hell else would one even conceive of using besides good old GK for such a thing? For the stars of the video I was able to enlist the fantastic talents of Teresa Decher and Aaron Thomas to play a young couple that is brought together by their mutual love of Pac Man set to a high energy karaokified version of Yaz's, "Only you".

Crew wise Nate Goodman served as the Director of Photography and John Bacone kindly agreed to hoist some lights as well as make a brief guest appearance, to top it all off Ron Gassaway was able to tweak a really sweet karaoke midi version of the Yazoo tune. Please come on out on May 8th to Holocene and bear witness to a night of unforgettable karaoke awesomeness and party the night away, the show also features sets from Hooliganship, Rush-N-Disco and DJ BJ!

In The Can head Alum Karl Lind here, Before we get into what ITC has been up to I'd like to start this update by acknowledging that there is undoubtedly a lot of interesting upcoming challenges brewing worldwide, the state of our current economic system being one of them. I try to take a few moments every day (usually with my morning coffee) to visualize and then accordingly begin to actualize how the work that I love to do can help serve as a catalyst towards achieving positive and long lasting change for the better, needless to say I can't do it alone so if you have any interesting and collaborative ideas hit please hit me up! Alright, now for your amusement here are our long overdue ITC updates, thanks for tuning in!

Shooting video for The Cascade Aids Project's, "Camp Starlight for Kids"

Back at the end of August 2008 In The Can Alum Karl Lind headed out to the Oregon Coast with Soundview Recording's Dave Bamford and Jill Remensyder to shoot a video for the Cascade Aids Project's "Camp Starlight for Kids". Right when we pulled up I could tell today would be one I'd remember for a very long time, the weather was absolutely perfect. Karl was serving as the productions Director of Photography (DP) for the shoot, the goal was to interview staff and campers and learn about the unique experience that the camp offers them. We had an extremely short amount of time due to the camp wanting to keep the production as low key as possible to show respect for the campers privacy.

What resulted was a very moving piece that the folks at C.A.P. loved, the video was edited and scored by Soundview Recording's Dave Bamford.

DVD Authoring for the, "Capture Series" DVDs:

In the Fall of 2008 In The Can Alums Karl Lind and John Bacone performed a ton of DVD authoring creating discs that accompany the, "Capture" series of books from Pediment Publishing. The DVD production has been guided by the direction of Peter Slaney of Intuit Films, the project has presented some very interesting challenges and has been a great experience, we're happy to report that we are currently looking forward to seeing an increase of these projects in 2009!

Working with Empirical UX to create a video for 2009 CES

During the busy Thanksgiving holidays In The Can Alum Karl Lind had a great time shooting and editing a 90 second video for Empirical UX, the piece was commissioned by a major tech company and it recently premiered at the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show (C.E.S.) unfortunately we can't post this video, you'll just have to believe us when we say "it rocked!"

Creating the Imawik commercial with Makerlab

In October of 2008 In The Can Alums Karl Lind and John Bacone collaborated with some very future thinking folks over at the Makerlab collective of Portland on a proof of concept/spec ad for their "Imawik" application, a cool image recognition tool that they are developing for use on your Iphone - check it out! Major thanks to Tim Diens of Northwestern Exposure for the use of his wonderful Sony EX1 camera for the shoot.

Making Holocene's 4th annual Mini-Golf Art Invitational video

FORE! Back in December of 2008 In The Can Alum Karl Lind had a "wee" bit of fun working with In The Can Alum and artist about town John Bacone documenting the construction of his, "unique mini-golf hole" the video was made to promote Holocene's 4th annual Mini-Golf Art Invitational. A great event that brings tons of awesome Portland based artists and designers together in the name of Mini-Golf and undbridled creativity.

Providing live event video coverage for worthy causes with Smartech AV

In The Can Alum Karl Lind recently helped our friends over at Smartech Audio Visual to provide live video event coverage at two really awesome non-profit events, the 1st being the OMSI Genius awards on January 24th at which I am happy to report they were able to raise over 500,000 for a very worthy cause: helping to foster future geniuses! (Newsflash: we need alot more of em' folks!)
The 2nd event was an event hosted by the Jewish Federation of Portland on February 25th at the Governor Hotel, "Impact with Gerda Klein: A Survivor's Tale of Hope" This was an incredibly powerful event, it was amazing to hear Gerda's tale of how she managed to survive the Holocaust and it was really an honor to be present to hear her story as well as lend my skills to the event.

Screaming Zonker's video helps Reeves + Jones to land a deal

In early February In The Can Alum Karl Lind fielded a," hey, I know this is very last minute but.." call to (in very short order) help create a zippy and fun video to help represent Reeves + Jones "Screaming Zonkers" at the recent International Toy Fair in New York. Karl was able to create a really fun and most importantly very effective video that helped secure Reeve + Jones no less than a manufacturing deal, congrats fellas!

Pixie Project's "Pet of the Week" videos

In The Can Alum Karl is getting ready to go into production on a series of, "Pet of the Week" videos for Portland's Pixie Project a very amazing non-profit organization dedicated to helping orphaned animals find their "Forever Homes" and needless to say we're very excited to have the opportunity to help them tell their awesome "tail". What makes this project so exciting is that actors Mercedes Rose and Harold Phillips are lending their fine talents to the production and for that we'd like thank them - our fellow canine and feline friends say thank you too! Look for more news about the Pixie Project's "Pet of the Week" videos in the very near future.

Karaoke Throwdown 2009

In case you missed it In The Can Alum Karl Lind made a pretty silly karaoke video for the 2008 PDX Film Festival's "Karoake Throwdown" event. If you couldn't make it, no worries, he'll be at it again at this year's festival with yet another 80's sing along nostalgia tinged piece of digital magic: this is an event you don't want to miss! Though not all of the details are for public knowledge at this time Karl can report that the classic videogame arcade Ground Kontrol has been secured as a location for the shoot and that local actress and model Teresa Decher has signed on to star in the video.

PUTTING A LID ON IT (wrap up)

To sum it all up In The Can Productions is looking forward to a fantastic year of working with our partners to create interesting, captivating and consistently inspiring video projects. We enjoy working with the community of Portland, Oregon as well as beyond (we like to think local but with a truly global point of view). We'd like to leave end this update with a few uplifting thoughts from two very inspiring individuals.

"All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence." - Martin Luther King Jr.

"Focusing your life solely on making a buck shows a certain poverty of ambition. It asks too little of yourself. Because it's only when you hitch your wagon to something larger than yourself that you realize your true potential." - Barak Obama

Gates of Steel Karaoke Music Video @ 35th NW Film and Video Festival

Hello,

I am happy to announce that the short film I wrote, directed, acted in and edited will be playing twice in the upcoming 35th NW Film and Video Festival which runs from Nov 7-15th.
The first screening will take place this Friday Nov.7th 7pm in the Shorts #1 Program which will also mark opening of the NW Film and Video Festival.

It is not without a heavy heart that I also have some very unfortunate news to report: Doug Baum who was an actor in the video very recently and quite unexpectedly passed away, you can read a very nice memorial article about Doug written by local PDX Filmmaker and Writer David Walker here. As many of you may be aware Doug was very active in the local PDX community as a producer, actor as well as director on many projects.

I'd like to especially invite everyone out attend the Nov.7th screening as I am dedicating it to the memory of Doug, sadly, I didn't get the chance to know Doug super well, we actually attended the same Video/TV Production program at Mt. Hood Community College several years ago. I always had good conversations with the man when I would bump into him at various film and video screenings around town as he was always in good spirits, in fact I can't recall him ever having a bad thing to say, he really did a great job as an actor in my short earlier this year and I really wish he could be here to attend this screening, rest in peace man.

Please feel free to forward this invitation to anyone you think would be interested in possibly attending. For the Nov. 7th screening the video will be receiving special live vocal accompaniment courtesy of Fern Capella lead singer of local Acapella group The Repair. The Gates of Steel Karaoke Video was originally created for the 2008 PDX Film Fest's "Karaoke Throwdown" A ton of awesome local PDX Filmmakers and artists contributed to making my video, so much thanks go out to all of them.
