The PCC Cascade Gallery is proud to present an installation by Portland-based sculptor, Mylan Rakich. You maybe familiar with his steel sculpture that is located between SSB and MAHB on the Cascade Campus. Rakich's works are primarily large scale steel fabrications that are lyrical and incorporate the industrial and natural worlds. In his piece, FROSTING, the artist departs from his usual means of working to experiment with installation, new materials and themes. He is represented by Butters Gallery in Portland and his sculptures are in public and private collections.

A fellow carbon based life form, friend, filmmaker, storyteller, supporter of the arts and creative endeavors at large.

What do you do?

Direct, shoot and edit short films and videos for non-profit, corporate and private clientele as well as my own creative enjoyment; I love to make music videos, experimental short films + collaborate with other artists. I also enjoy curating video screenings and art events.

What is your inspiration? (Why do you create?)

Life and the perception it affords and inspires + the opportunity to help connect people through ideas and storytelling.

How do you do what you do when you do what you do?

Intuitively, thoughtfully, intentionally and with a dash of humor!

Your magic moment?

It can come to me when I am in the midst of a project that I am enjoying or when I am riding my bike a nice sunny afternoon, I try to have at least a few a day!

Walk us through your day of awesomeness

Wake up early, do a little yoga, get online write emails and reply to folks, go to the gym and get the mind and body in sync. Get back to work for awhile longer, put in some time on my personal creative projects then call it a day and then rinse, wash and repeat!

In five years, where would you like to be?

Doing what I am doing now but more of it, I think it’d be fun to work on larger creative endeavors collaboratively with more folks too.

Apart from creating things, what do you do?

I love to ride my bike and play pinball as often as possible! I also love enjoying other people’s creativity via attending concerts, art shows, performances and film/video screenings.

What advice would you give to those of the like-mind?

Keep doing it, consciously.

Last night we premiered a video we just made for our friends over at The Dill Pickle Club, a really great organization that focuses on creating fun and engaging programs to help remember, preserve and celebrate the history of our fair city of Portland, Oregon.
The video is titled "How Does the City Work?" and it's a fun little look at the club's 2011 curricula as well as brief introduction to the organization's mission. The brilliant animation was provided by Portland's very own Ben Popp and Jack Saturn provided the musical score, check out The Dill Pickle Club and find out how you can join in on the fun!

While football fans spent Sunday morning assembling bean dip and bowls of chips for Super Bowl parties, the leaders of the Dill Pickle Club debated which colored marker was best suited for labeling dozens of jars of homemade pickles.

RasmussenAmanda Miller (front) and (from left) Kyle von Hoetzendorff, Lucy Rockwell and Marc Moscato, all organizers of the Dill Pickle Club, are hosting a pickle auction and membership drive tonight at the Ace Hotel in downtown Portland. The event will also feature music, dancing and other entertainment.

The group was finishing preparations for tonight's Perfect Pickle Fundraiser & Membership Drive at The Cleaners at the Ace Hotel in downtown Portland. The 7 p.m. event is the first big fundraiser for the fledgling civic organization.

Attendees who pay the $5 entry fee can sample eight pickle creations from area chefs and vote for their favorite. The winning chef gets a giant, green ribbon proclaiming the distinction as Portland's "Perfect Pickle."

"We supplied the dill, the pickling cucumbers and the Mason jars, and the rest was up to them," said club director Marc Moscato.

The chefs' concoctions -- 96 jars of them -- will be auctioned off to support club programming. Plus, the event will include a smorgasbord of other activity, including musical performances, a reading from poet Walt Curtis, a dance-off and a presentation on Portland's pickling history.

To top it all off, former Mayor Bud Clark will provide a voice-over in an animated film highlighting the club's plans for 2011.

Selling jars of pickles isn't your typical nonprofit fundraiser, but the Dill Pickle Club isn't your average nonprofit. It began as co-founders Lucy Rockwell and Kyle von Hoetzendorff's idea for an organization that provides field trips geared toward adults. Moscato later joined them, and the notion evolved into a community club aimed at enlightening Portlanders about the city's history and shared culture.

So far, that has been accomplished through lectures, guided tours and publications. The group's mission statement is evolving, but Moscato sees the club as a civic organization for the masses.

"It really crosses across class lines, across racial lines, so if you come to a Dill Pickle Club gathering, it's really different," he said.

In a year and a half, the club has grown to more than 160 members. Its operating budget is still modest -- about $25,000 last year -- but Moscato and a small cadre of volunteers are remarkably productive. Last year, they hosted several lectures and guided tours, including a visit to central Oregon's boomtowns and a walking tour of Portland's Chinatown. It's a largely volunteer effort. Annual club membership starts at $50.

"It's really been built from the ground up," Moscato said.

Today's fundraiser was mostly organized through contacting friends in the food industry who provided the labor for free. Some pickles were fermented in a cellar for weeks. Others took only a few hours. One chef stuffed big hunks of garlic, fennel and other tidbits into the jars along with the cucumbers.

Unbound Pickling co-owner Katie Hancock and her husband, Jesse, took a Southwestern approach with chipotle, cumin, cilantro, cocoa and lime.

"Instead of following along a traditional line of a dill pickle, we tried to follow along with what we like doing," said Hancock, whose business sells pickles at farmers markets.

The Perfect Pickle event will kick off a year of programming with the theme "How does a city work?" Topics covered on six planned tours will include the local water system, the news industry and the criminal justice system. The club will also republish four out-of-print books about Portland in conjunction with a lecture series on the city's recent history.

The club's goal is to reach 250 members by the night's end. That, and hopefully to sell out of pickles.

So what's with the name? Moscato came up with it one morning in Rockwell's backyard. It's an ode to a documentary he created on the original Dill Pickle Club, a Chicago speakeasy that closed in 1934.

"Marc was like, 'You know, I don't know if I can stand by all these other groups and organizations, but you know what I can stand by? The Dill Pickle Club,'" Rockwell said.

Fire, Proof

Back on an exceptionally cold and bluster day in December of 2010 we went out with Akron Family's very own Seth Olinsky and made this little video tribute to Jimi Hendrix's unforgettable Monterey performance happen out in good old St. Johns Oregon. The film features Seth experimenting with New Signal Process's "Breakout Pedal" a very cool little (and nearly flameproof!) device.

Bud Clark and the Dill Pickle Club

We had a very fun shoot and voiceover session yesterday afternoon with Marc Moscato of the Dill Pickle Club and Ex Mayor of Portland, Bud Clark! Bud kindly volunteered to help provide the narration for the Dill Pickle Club's upcoming "How the City Works promo video. This video will be a fun and informational look at the Dill Pickle Club's upcoming 2011 program as well as an introduction to their mission statement as well as the animated debut of their much beloved mascot, the Du Dil Duk.

Dave Bamford of SoundView Film and Recording graciously offered up his expertise in directing and recording Bud's narration (BTW Bud Clark ripped through the script, the guy is obviously a natural!) everybody had a blast working together and we are all stoked for it to come together!

The "How the City Works" video will premiere February 7th @7pm at the Perfect Pickle Fundraising event being held at the Ace Hotel in downtown Portland. The video is directed by Karl Lind who also shares script writing credits with Marc Moscato, the Du Dil Duck was animated on 16mm high contrast film by the amazingly talented filmmaker/animator, Ben Popp! Additionally, we are quite psyched that Jack Saturn of the Recursive Delete collective will be providing the videos musical accompaniment.

Something Else

Back in December of 2010 I took a trip out to a fairly remote tree farm outside The Gorge with my friend Jennifer Keyser to shoot her short film, Something Else. I had a really great time working on it and I am really looking forward to folks getting an opportunity to see it soon, it is a very spirited and eloquent little film. In addition to providing the cinematography I also edited and color corrected it, Dave Bamford of Soundview Recording provided the audio recording studio services to capture Something Else's narration (voiced by the filmmaker). The film is now being submitted to select festivals so hopefully I will have some more news to post about it soon!

It has been awhile since we’ve done one of these! But I’ve seen some strange, strange videos in the last couple of days. So here you be, a video roundup with lots and lots of randomness in it…
Last Prick Standing, “Zebra”
I’m honestly not sure if I should like this video from Portland rockers Last Prick Standing, but Ireally like it. It’s like a hippie-dippie Hold Steady song combined with some weird Black Crowes/John Mellencamp-type shit. What’s going on here!? I can’t figure it out. The video, directed by local filmmaker Karl Lind, just adds to my confusion. There’s a nauseating, Tim & Eric quality to the thing, but it’s also pretty technically impressive and it . So LPS gets a wow from me, even if it’s a wow of the head-scratching variety. The chorus will be stuck in my head for the rest of the day.

We were recently asked to assemble a reel highlighting recent feature film and commercial work for our friends over at the Oregon Film and Video Office for their annual film meeting. The reel includes some truly exceptional film and video work made by local production houses such as: BENT IMAGE LAB, @LARGE FILMS, LIMBO FILMS and HIVE FX, in addition there are several clips from feature films and TV shows that were recently produced in Oregon such as Twilight, Paranoid Park, A Walk In My Shoes, Wake Before I Die, Without a Paddle 2: Nature Calls, The Burning Plain, Leverage and last but certainly not least the upcoming IFC produced series Portlandia!

Afterwards please go check out the Oregon Media Production Association's annual holiday party over at Portland City Hall.

I asked Will once if he worked on his own projects to keep from being bored with his other, more conventional, gigs. “I was never bored!” he said. “I was learning from everything I did. No matter where the project came from, I would learn something new.”

We’ll present the newest chapter in a Oulipean experiment, and our 3RD ANNIVERSARY SHOW (mysterious and random door prizes provided)! Five exemplary local writers, one musician, and a filmmaker responded to the theme PERMANENCE, penning 250 words per week (or making 250 seconds of film) for four weeks, totaling 1,000 words each, in response to the theme and prompts created/found/stolen by series curator Mel Favara. The results, as per usual, have been wildly divergent, smart, and fresh: want to see how six participants employed the phrase, “tattooed the word "tiny" across her knuckles” and the words tattered,
sale, spin, pool, and foil in one 250 word piece? Join us Thursday the 2nd at the Waypost to hear the writer’s innovative writing and also witness the 1,000 Words house band, Reid Trevarthen, playing songs based on the prompts at the intermission.

Performers:
Joe Pitkin can make few claims to specialness besides the fact that he is a perennial reader for 1,000 Words: he’s kind of like the Randy Newman of 1,000 Words. His poetry has appeared in North American Review, Beloit Poetry Journal, Los Angeles Review, and elsewhere; he started writing speculative fiction a couple of years ago and has had pieces in M-Brane and Expanded Horizons. He teaches—if you can call what he does teaching—at Clark College.

Kevin Sampsell is the publisher of the micropress, Future Tense Books, and a writer whose work has appeared widely in places like Nerve, Night Train, Opium, McSweeney's, Quick Fiction, Yeti, and Smith Magazine. He is the editor of Portland Noir and the author of Creamy Bullets and A Common Pornography.

Laura Moulton earned an MFA from Eastern Washington University. She has taught writing workshops in high schools, universities, and the women’s prison in Wilsonville. Her art piece “Object Permanence” was commissioned by Portland State University in 2009. Her stories and essays have been featured in Hip Mama, Portland Tribune, and Brain, Child. Her essay about visiting slums in Brazil appeared in Street Roots in June. She is a contributing artist to Disappearing, a book project by artist Melody Owen. Moulton is currently at work on a novel.

Amy Temple Harper is adopted from Korea and lives in Portland. Her poetry and
fiction have been published in the Oregon Literary Review and The Portland Review.

Kirby Light is a peripheral visionary! He can see way into the future but only off to the left and right. He is a firm believer that punctuation is not sexy and that the state of a man's kitchen is no indication of how well that man can take care of a woman. When not being the hero and villain of his own story you can find Kirby laying in the gutter looking up at the stars, or you can find him writing, but the writing is just the residue and far from what he does best.

Musician Reid Trevarthen lived in Italy at one point in time. At other points in time he played “Weather Watchers” with his grade school friends, learned how to speak some German and alternated between wearing and not wearing glasses. Now he is playing music and starting to learn to do the things that grown-ups do.

Karl Lind is a filmmaker, cameraman, director, editor, and video artist living in Portland, Oregon. He has been contemplating adopting a cat for quite awhile. See his work at www.inthecanllc.com.

Curator/Host Mel Favara has helmed 1,000 Words for three years, wrote the zine teen sleuth through the 90’s and 00s, teaches writing and literature at Clark College, and makes a mean marinara from scratch.

The 1,000 Words series, a bi-monthly reading based on the Oulipo, challenges the writers who accept it to write under certain arbitrary constraints over one month and then to read the results of their labors in public, currently at The Waypost. It works like this: every other month, 4-6 writers and a musician agree to write 250 words per week for four weeks based on a set of pretty twisted prompts--usually a phrase or sentence and a list of words that must be included in that week's effort. At the end of the month, the writers agree to read their findings in public in exchange for a free drink.

Getting ready to head to San Francisco tomorrow morning to take part in two excellent days of programming and workshops at the 5th Annual ATA (Artists Television Access) Film & Video Festival! The ATA is a truly amazing venue as well as an incredibly vital artist/volunteer run organization and I urge you to please check them out and show them some LOVE!

The Microcinema collective that I work with here in Portland, Grand Detour in many ways regards the ATA as a Valhalla of sorts for experimental media so needless to say I am honored along with fellow filmmakers Jeff Guay and Ben Popp to have the opportunity to represent the spirit of Portland at this fine festival.

Working on Portlandia (coming to IFC, soonish!

A few weeks back I shot about a weeks worth of (BTS) video for an upcoming IFC series called "Portlandia". Carrie Brownstein (formerly of Sleater Kinney) and Fred Armisen (currently on SNL) are the shows creators and it's directed by Jonathan Krisel who directs the "Digital Shorts" for SNL amongst others.

The week I was there (which was the last week of production) I shot a ton of the tried and true "making of the tv show"type bits as well as a few totally off the cuff (and very fun, at least for me!) improv bits with some of the awesome guest stars, additionally I shot a series of very low key station I.D.s that are probably due to hit the air and webwaves pretty soon, to be honest with you all this is the only material I was told they were definitely using but I have hope that some of the other fun stuff might get to see the light of day but I guess we'll have to see what happens! All in all this was one of the funnest weeks of work I have had in recent memory, the cast and crew were all very cool and the only difficulty I ever experienced was holding in the laughter while they were rolling on set.

The show utilized a ton of Portland locations and local talent, it was surprising and refreshing to see several local businesses actually appear as themselves, a complete 180 turn from another tv show that is also shot on location in Portland but is supposed to pass as Boston. From what I saw I am stoked to tell you that I have really high hopes for this show's success, the talent in front of and behind the camera were all on point and on the back the show's editor is none other than Doug Lusenhopp AKA DJ DUGG POUND! a wonderful conceptual humorist and filmmaker in his own right.

However, I need to take a moment and share with you the most useful and heartwarming insight that I took away from the time I spent on this show: it was a totally awesome to have the opportunity to work with all of the Portland locals that were employed by it! While I only worked steadily for a week many more of the people employed on Portlandia had over a month's worth of full time work. I strongly urge than anyone who is interested in learning more about how you can support the continued growth of the Film and Video Industry (and in the State of Oregon at large!) please go check out local actor, voice talent and industry advocate Harold Phillips' blog www.orfilmandtvdollars.wordpress.com/ Oregon's state elections are coming up and it's definitely important that our senators are aware that Oregon's film incentive program truly helps to bring more work here.

Port City: Then and Now

One of our projects this Summer was to create a video that takes a look at the history as well as an overview of the services Port City Development Center (affectionately known as Port City) currently offers and their vision for the future.

"At Port City Development Center we embrace the culture and the power of CAN. Rather than focusing on the disabilities that are associated with individuals, we celebrate the gifts that everyone possesses. Through innovative programs, caring, educated, and trained staff, and a philosophy of acceptance and appreciation, Port City is able to create a reality that not only supports but also inspires growth."

This video turned out to be an incredibly engaging opportunity to collaborate with folks that are doing fantastic work in the community and we were very excited to help them tell their story as the only other video they had ever made was created back in the early 90's and well, alot of things have changed in the last fifteen years! We are truly inspired by the work that these folks do and hope that this video aids not only in Port City's mission but that it contributes to the larger sphere of helping others gain a greater understanding of individuals with developmental disabilities and inspiring joyful collaborations with them!

The video premiered on August 21st at a Port City fundraising event which helped to raise 2,000.00 that evening! To get involved or make a donation to Port City and it's many fine programs please go HERE, thank you!

Portland General Electric competes in the 17th Annual Pac NW Lineman's Rodeo

Earlier this Summer I shot some video for Portland General Electric of the 17th Annual Pacific NW Lineman's Rodeo. This event is a competitive and pretty hardcore feat of muscle, dexterity and calm in the face of danger. Remember, these are the guys are out there in storms hanging on power lines to keep the lights and electricity flowing to our homes.

The video highlights the efforts of two outstanding competitors as we follow them through event practice and competition, in the end they didn't end up coming away with first place but PGE as a whole did exceptionally well and walked away with several prizes.
It was a toasty 100+ degree day out in Gresham Oregon and I had a camera glued to my hand for the better part of 12hrs...it was quite a day!

Flying high with Pendelum Aerial Arts

Last week we were out shooting Pendelum Aerial Arts' "High Art: A Surreal Portrait of the Soul" which is a high wire act coupled with live music, theatre and acrobatics that we ended up dubbing "awesome garde" as it isn't easy to pigeonhole just exactly what is going on here. I excised a few video stills shot from my Canon 7D and I am really stoked on how the video looks, I hope I can post some of it for you to check out here in the near future!

Summer has literally just about flown by (again...) we've been busy here working with a ton of folks in the community to create some fun and useful videos, one of which is a campaign for one of our favorite Portland based resources and shops: Reading Frenzy!

[75] The strongest films of any length in last year’s festival both undermine the putative glamour of life on the Portland streets, a myth almost as old as the city’s filmmaking culture. Along the bus mall, Karl Lind’s 122 Random Seconds is an experimental film turned into an accidental documentary when the shoot is interrupted by a man in a Randy Moss jersey who denounces TriMet and the military before asking for a cigarette. Like most actual encounters with the homeless, it is sad and frightening, without the protective casing of artistic intent. These two minutes stuck with me more than any of the more considered entries here—though Don’t Worry, It’s a New Century includes an amusing, nude homage to Matt McCormick, and Best of Show winner Nous Deux Encore gains poignancy through restraint, telling the story of a marriage and bereavement solely through old photographs. Carla Mann amuses herself by choreographing, performing and teaching contemporary dance, something she has done since 1983. Happy distractions—creating site-specific work, dance video installations and choreography for the theater and concert stage—fill gladful hours, as do performing with the incomparable Jim McGinn and with the sterling members of Minh Tran & Company, and relishing fond memories of working with tEEth, Oslund+Co/Dance, Collage Dance Theatre, Bonnie Merrill and Dance Gatherer among others. Chairing the Dance Department at Reed College, where she has taught since 1995, is an endless diversion, her students a delight…Jim McGinn is so happy to get to dance with Carla Mann and grateful to those who support PWNW.
SUSTENTACULA is a band. It is peopled by Ryan Stuewe (pronounced stee-vee) and David Rafn (pronounced mega-cat). Ryan plays drums and creates loops. David sings/poeticizes and programs computer sounds. Their piece is titled: “Political Comedy, Magic, and Reggae” It will probably be a musical exploration of something reprehensibly funky yet lasciviously thought provoking.

TAYLOR A. YOUNG + SARA NAEGELIN + LEAH WILMOTH collaborate for “Hunch,” an excerpt from the evening-length work Tinnitus, premiering June 25-27 at The Plant (939 SE Alder St). The dance explores the curious ways in which we consciously and unconsciously embody the ghosts of sounds that haunt us daily.
Sara Naegelin has danced her way through life and has the feet to prove it…Leah Wilmoth has been involved in the arts all her life. She loves witnessing and being a part of creative collaborations…During his tenure in Portland, Taylor Young has performed in new work by Gregg Bielemeier, Paige McKinney, Katrina O’Brien, Mary Oslund, and POV Dance. He’s delighted now to be collaborating with Sara and Leah, generating movement he can call his own.

Josh Billeter is a Portland native who works at Bamboo Revolution and is a board member of Voice for Oregon Innovation & Sustainability (VOIS). When not pimping bamboo, he and his wife, Jennifer Yocom, enjoy the outdoors, music, film, local culture and general shenanigan…Thomas Lauderdale is bandleader/pianist for the “rollicking around-the-world musical adventure known as Pink Martini…Nate Overmeyer was born and raised in a separatist doomsday cult in the Ozark Mountains. He escaped at fourteen, spending eight years in California as a printmaker and environmental compliance technician before coming to Oregon to pursue a career in snowboarding. Nate has studied art at PNCA, architecture at The University of Oregon, and art history at Portland State University. Nate is also a singer and percussionist. As a studio musician, he has worked with artists such as Larry Norman and Pink Martini. He is a member of The Flash Choir, and a hootenanny group called The Stumptown Family Ramblers. He lives in Portland with his partner, Sarah, and their four dogs.

We were recently invited to help shoot some video for our buddies over at Animation Dynamics inc. (ADi), an awesome little creative powerhouse of an animation studio based here in Portland, Oregon. The story behind the creation of this spot is that the folks at ADi are super stoked on their company's increased productivity due in part to switching over to the AT&T "Synapse" phones system, so stoked that in fact they were inspired to create a short live action/animation video testimonial to prove it! In The Can enlisted Nate Goodman as the DP and Dave Bamford of Soundview Recording to boom and mix the audio and we all had a fun day hanging out at ADi HQ in NW Portland. The end result is a very fun and sweet looking piece and the icing on the cake is the brilliant approach the ADi crew brought to the piece in bringing themselves to life as their animated alter egos - check it out RIGHT HERE!

Gadgetrak Mobile Security video shoot

Last week we had some fun shooting some video in downtown Portland with Ken Westin, CEO of Gadgetrak, a great company that creates applications to help keep your cell phone and laptops safe and secure from theft. We shot several insert scenes of cells getting dropped, run over and stolen. All in all it was a total blast, it was also the first project we've shot relying on the Canon EOS 7d and I have to say I was more than impressed with the job this great little camera did! So nice to shoot with in public because it hardly seems to draw any attention whatsoever, a big plus if you are doing a "guerilla" style shoot.

POW Fest 2010 trailer

Shot and presented entirely on glorious 16mm, Cinema Project is excited to bring to Portland the work of hands-on filmmaker Naomi Uman. With Uman in attendance to present and discuss her films, career, and methods, the two-night event focuses on her most recent projects on bucolic Ukrainian life. Retracing the steps in reverse of her great grandparents’ emigration from Eastern Europe, she documents the colorful village of Legedzine, Ukraine, where she still lives today. Working at the intersections of documentary and experimental film, Uman’s aesthetic is both delicate in approach to its subjects and bold in its images and processing.
My work consistently participates in creating a living history. I focus on customs that are about to disappear. I live with people who continue to milk cows by hand; who plant, harvest, and preserve their own food. I, too, engage in these practices. In this way, I experience history, as it slowly becomes just that: HISTORY. Seeing the past before it vanishes prolongs the present and makes it more profound. Working in sixteen-millimeter film is a way of holding onto the beauty and delicacy of a format and a practice that are becoming obsolete. Like hand sowing a field or knitting a sweater, this is not the easiest or most practical way of working. It is often simpler and more practical to have large, industrial farms, to purchase already manufactured clothing and to shoot and edit on modern, electronic media. Yet the food, clothing and film produced in this manner has another layer of significance, a value added due to the limitations, difficulties, intention and emotion implied in their production. –Naomi Uman

Jacob's Ladder and the Bardo Thodol

This morning I discovered that "Jacob's Ladder" one my all time favorite films, " (Dir. Adriane Lyne, 1990) was mainly inspired by the Bardo Thodol which is also known as the Tibetan book of the Dead, an ancient Tibetan funerary text which is essentially a guide book for the soul during it's transition from the living to afterlife realms. Even though I have yet to read this book it recently occured to me that this book somehow had to be the underlying conceptual foundation for this film. This morning I Googled, "Jacob's Ladder and The Bardo Thodol" and immediately came across this article on IMDB. I've loved Jacob's Ladder since I saw it back in the early 90's, I find it to be a very effective and well acted horror film with a surprisingly psychological and ultimately spiritual subtext, I now present to you one of my favorite scenes from the film (hate it when youtube disables embedding!)

Last week we were excited to get the opportunity to attend the premiere of the goodbye video for Hanna Andersson CEO Phil Iosca that I recently shot for with our good friends over at SoundView Recording. The project was very fun to work on and the goodbye party they had for Phil was a total blast, they really are one big happy family and I was really stoked on how much fun everyone had making as well as viewing the video.

Kings of the Road DVD and The End of Poverty?

Last week saw In The Can HQ was putting the finishing DVD authoring touches on Dan Schaefer's, "Kings of the Road" which is a great little documentary about the history of the Portland Buckaroos NHL Hockey team. The disc has some very sweet extras including a nice slideshow of photos throughouth the history of the team as well as the audio from two radio broadcast games. The DVD Will be available for purchase here beginning in February.

On Friday we ended the week with helping our friends over at Smart Tech AV videotaping the introduction and subsquent discussion that occured after the screening of the documentary film The End of Poverty? A powerful film that frankly offers a pretty grim assessment of where our current economic policies both foreign and abroad are taking us and the future of the Earth. It's my understanding that the video I shot may end up on Freespeech TV here in the near future, I will definitely post a link if it does.

Whoa, 2009 is really over? Really for real really? Well, thank goodness! YES what a fun and hectic and somewhat chaotic year it twas', for all of us but I'm excited to say that we're heading into 2010 with a very sunny outlook and a basket full of hope for this new year. We here at In The Can are currently sending vibes of cheer and optimism to all the four corners and may it see fit to infect your dear mind, heart and soul!

Our first shoot of the year is booked for tomorrow, I'll be behind the camera under the auspises of Director and good friend Dave Bamford of SoundView Recording and we'll be shooting some video for fabric mavens Hanna Andersson. The shoot is going to be a fun and creative one, judging from the shot list I have been eyeing I better eat my Wheaties because it looks like I won't be sitting down for even a second! Needless to say I think that at quitting time tomorrow I may just see fit to treat myself to a beer at The Belmont Station tomorrow evening - I Love it!

Other Cinema's NEW show 12/19/09 SF, CA

I'll be heading down to San Francisco here this Saturday and pretty much heading straight to Other Cinema's NEW (New Experimental Works) show which is taking place at the Artist's Television Access studio in the lovely Mission District. The series is curated by filmmaker Craig Baldwin (no stranger on this blog) and I am excited to see what he has in store for his Winter edition. While in town I plan on visiting the SF MOMA, catching up with some friends, walking all over the place and I am open to suggestions as far as taking on other activities.

I had a really great time shooting this event and got tons of cool little clips so I will try and get some of the other stuff I shot up soon - including but not limited to kickass performances by The March Fourth Marching Band as well as Storm Large giving some backstage kickboxing lessons.

Currently I am in the process of performing a DVD remastering and authoring project for another one of my favorite (truly!) independent filmmakers, Bill Brown and his first DVD collection of short films, "The Next Best Place" is currently in the house! It's been a joy getting to watch the four short films that are included in this volume, including: Roswell, Buffalo Common, Confederation Park and Mountain State. Brown's playfulness and wry sense of humor mixes incredibly well with absolutely gorgeous cinematography, all seemingly created from a truly observant tourist's point of view, the films are every bit as charming as they are thought provoking.

122 Random Seconds to play opening night of Zero Film Fest 12/2 in L.A. California.

Fresh of the heels of two very fun screenings as part of the 36th NW Film and Video Festival I'm happy to announce that "122 Random Seconds" next festival screening will occur as part of the opening night line up at the upcoming Zero Film Festival, a really great independent festival geared towards shining the light on great ideas made for minimal bucks.

The screening is happening on the rooftop lounge of The Standard Hotel rooftop bar - I am really hoping to be able to attend (it'd be a nice warm break from our current NW winter weather) and I am currently crossing my fingers!

122 Random Seconds wins Best Documentary at 36th NW Film and Video Festival

I have some incredibly happy news to share with you all, my short film 122 Random Seconds was selected for the "Best Documentary" award at the 36th NW Film and Video Festival! The film will screen with a bevy of award winning films during the Shorts #1 Program on Friday Nov. 6th at the Whitsell Theater at 7 pm.

I am truly honored to participate in this year's festival, a big round of thanks to everyone at the NW Film Center as well as their sponsors for putting together what looks to be a truly exceptional program of not only films but also the chance to participate in creative community building with this year's "NW Filmmaker's Barcamp" which you should absolutely participate in! To catch you up if you missed the last Canned Goods entry, recently I was invited to show my short film 122 Random Seconds as part of a local screening event curated by Brian Libby that went down at Design Within Reach here in Portland on Thursday 9.17.

I truly enjoyed this show! The films really ran the gamut, from the experimental and somber: Matt McCormick's "It was a crushing defeat" to the experiential and slightly ominous: Brian Libby's, "Nocturne" and " to the joyous and dare I say it, sublime and even slightly commercial (in a great way!) timelapse films of Andrew Curtis: "Cinco De Mayo Celebration" and "St. John's Bridge". In addition to the exceptional program I have to give a big nod and thanks to the hosts, Design Within Reach who provided quite an interesting venue to have a film screening, definitely one of the more comfortably outfitted venues I have ever screened at!

Brian graciously gave me the opportunity to speak a bit about my personal thoughts on why Portland is such an awesome town to live in as a filmmaker, I pointed out some of the usual suspects starting off with the PDX Film Fest! And the NW Film Center's annual NW Film and Video Festival - which by the way is coming up very, very soon, November 6-14, 2009 to be exact.

I pointed out that many local Portland filmmakers and artists are also curators and event organizers thus we are able to effectively nurture and support one another and look out for each other, we create and then present work in a decidely homegrown and by default organic sense. Tonights screening reminded me just how lucky I am to live and work in such a supportive and inspiring environment, after the screening I got some very positive and encouraging feedback about my short film - it was a very good night.

Lending a hand to Film Action Oregon's "Music in Motion"

An animation workshop for youths combined with a music video shoot? Yep, and it all worked out perfectly!

On August 5th I had the awesome opportunity to give some support to Film Action Oregon's "Music in Motion" a great one day workshop they put on in conjunction with LAIKA (Makers of Coraline!). I gave camera assistance to DP Nate Goodman, I also got in a wee bit of shooting with the RED ONE camera we were using (these things are rad!) I also ran around and snapped off a few shots to document the event for Film Action Oregon.

Add into the mix shooting a music video shoot for the Portland artist Mirah being directed by Jainee Dial (who was also supervising the animation workshop) and you have a bit of chaos, and yet it all worked quite smoothly, big props to Jainee for putting all of this together!

It was really great to see youth so engaged with learning about animation, everyone was having a great time and the teachers were world class, some of the best people in the business in regards to animation. a few years back I had the opportunity to work with FAO and teach a 6wk workshop on documentary filmmaking called Project Youth Doc, this was a sweet return of sorts and I hope I will get the opportunity to help out on an event like this sometime in the very near future.

Sweating it out

Ok, if you live in the NW you know we are heading into the second day of a major heatwave! It's taking me (In The Can Alum Karl) all of my focus and energy to not go seek out a cool body of water and submerge myself within it all day.

In other news we are moving! Yes, we will now be calling downtown Portland our new HQ, 621 SW Alder Suite 380 C to be precise. Dave Bamford of Soundview Recording will be our next door neighbor, which will be convenient since I have signed up to be the Director of Photography for Dave Bamford and Maria Allred's, upcoming "Sole Girl" short film project, more news about that very soon...

Hola amigos,

In The Can Alum Karl here, I am happy to report that my favorite time of the year is returning yet again. Yes the 2009 edition of the PDX Film Fest! is nearly upon us. This year they have outdone themselves yet again in delivering to our fair city what promises to be a rather remarkable bounty of experimental cinematic treats.

This year (along with a bevy of other mega rad filmmakers) I was invited back to participate in the Karaoke Throwdown portion of the fest, I wasted no time (ok, a few months did go by) and came up with what I knew would be a fun project. Big ups to Art Santana and the rest of the peeps at Ground Kontrol Classic Game Arcade for coming through bigtime! I needed an 80's ish era playland for a location and what the hell else would one even conceive of using besides good old GK for such a thing? For the stars of the video I was able to enlist the fantastic talents of Teresa Decher and Aaron Thomas to play a young couple that is brought together by their mutual love of Pac Man set to a high energy karaokified version of Yaz's, "Only you".
